Hi,

Also consider the nature of the database and associated applications. Depending on how these apps sort, search and display items you might want to modify your numbering scheme.

Also, you might want to model of some of the ANSI docs.

There is a lot to be said for using a big numeric, effectively random but unique, part number which is the "Real" part number. This allows "Descriptive" part number to be used for sorting. This "Descriptive" number system can be easily changed as the descriptive syntax expands over time and different users. (No two people use the same descriptive terminology.)

A good example of "Limited" library software is schematic and PCB design tools. These often have fixed and simple structures where a purely numeric part number would be a disaster. But trying to get purchasing folks to build reasonable descriptive part numbers and keeping that system straight is also a disaster. The purchasing software is usually a little better at database management than CAD software so I would start looking there is you want am integrated engineering / purchasing system.

Take a look at the numbering system recommended in various commercial apps, Parts & Vendors comes to mind. It is a low cost application with features of a very high priced system. I have collected a lot of docs on BOM management over the years let me know if I can help.

Subject: Re: [TN] Board design numbering schemes

My system consists of 3 uppercase characters, 5 numbers i.e. EPD00501

•	EPD: Refers to a Product Design PCB, EPT: Refers to a Test PCB
•	005: Refers to the PCB number
•	01: Refers to the revision of the PCB
When a PCB is modified then the revision of the PCB will change to distinguish between the old and new designs.
Documents related to the PCB
•	EPD00501 S AA (Schematic Rev AA)
•	EPD00501 M AA (Specific Features Drawing / Fab Rev AA)
•	EPD00501 Z AA (Assembly Drawing Rev AA)
