Hi William,

If you havn't already settled on a system this one works pretty good. The assumption is that a board will always consist of a BOM, PWB, PWA & SCH drawings and a PCB source file. This system uses a non-intelligent base part number and a prefix which denotes the type of drawing/data. A quick glance at the part number and one can easily recognize that it is part of a board data set and what type.

Example of a complete set of board part numbers.

Part Number Description

BOM12345 Bill of Material (this can be tabulated as needed)
PWA12345 Printed Wiring Assembly drawing
PWB12345 Printed Wiring Board (fab) drawing
SCH12345 Schematic Drawing
PCB12345 CAD source files

Regards,
Rick

Subject: [TN] Board design numbering schemes

Hello - I am currently working with a small start-up on getting their numerous board designs configured. I have been stressing the importance of numbering their board designs with a numbering scheme of some type (schematic: "Dwg number - AANNN-NN" pcb: "Dwg number - AANNN-NN" pcb assy: "Dwg number - AANNN-NN" parts list: "Dwg number - AANNN-NN") I have always preferred "non-intelligent" schemes but I've seen alot of companies tend to build some intelligence into their schemes. Does anyone have any suggestions on numbering schemes? I've reviewed IPC-D-325 but their doesn't appear to be any suggestions in there. Thanks in advance for any help.
