We use enterprise PDM which automatically generates a sequential drawing number for each drawing that we create.

We use the following rules:

MCAD-xxxxxx for a mechanical CAD drawing from Solidworks.

ECAD-xxxxxx for our PCB schematic diagrams and pcb files, from Pulsonix.

Our ECAD drawings are broken down as follows:

A schematic and PCB file that have the same drawing number, e.g.

ECAD-123456.sch and ECAD-1233456.pcb

From the schematic file we output a PDF circuit diagram and parts list all again with the same drawing number but with different suffixes to indicate what the contents are:

ECAD-123456-CD.pdf for the circuit diagram.

ECAD-123456-PL.csv for the parts list.

From the PCB file we output drawings such as:

ECAD-123456-FAB for a fabrication drawing.

ECAD-123456-PCB for a drawing of the PCB layers.

ECAD-123456-ASM for an Assembly drawing.

We do have get our products certified with agencies such as UL and Baseefa and for these we create special versions of the circuit diagram and parts list where we omit as much detail as we can such as component values for non-intrinsically-safe components, or put a maximum or minimum allowable value in. In these cases we just add a -CERT to the end of the drawing to indicate that it's the certified version, so we have for example two circuit diagrams:

ECAD-123456-CD.pdf that we use for manufacturing

ECAD-123456-CD-CERT.pdf that UL have certified, where we have R1 1K minimum, C2 100nF maximum for example.

I've tried to keep it as simple as possible whilst also making the contents of the drawing easily recognisable as to purpose from just looking at the filename, and also to indicate clearly what drawings belong together for a single assembly.

Regards,

James
