One of the substances that was found several kilometers from Fukushima was Strontium 90, they also found short lived fission fragments in soil samples. One has to draw their own conclusions, but my guess is one of the units (2) underwent spontanious uncontrolled fission.

Seconded for strontium.

I knew as a kid that we got Strontium 90 from cow milk, but never knew (until I looked it up) that some plants - cabbage, onions, lettuce seem to concentrate strontium. No wonder there was concern after atmospheric nuclear testing! Cows were eating garden salads, and passing along the concentrated nuclear fallout to us?

Or, you could have given the hint that strontium chromate went on the REACh Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) last year, and many industries are having a devil of a time finding an effective non-hazardous anti-corrosive to replace this primer and conversion coating on bare metal.

I think it's Strontium. I'm old enough to remember the Strontium 90 scares.
