Hi Doug - no one has yet to post a correct answer so by default, you might get to be the winner today. Of course, the Friday Element Quiz Arbitration Board (FEQAB) has yet to rule on your submission...................

Doug,

I don't see why you would be disqualified

You got my vote for maybe not the correct but certainly the best answer.

George

Subject: Re: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question

Well now, Dave poses a perplexing one today. Volcanos put out an
astonishing amount of elements and greenhouse gasses. The US Congress
currently has a bill being considered that outlaws all volcanic eruptions
so that they will no longer contribute to global warming. Failure to
comply could result in fines for the offending volcano.

After perusing my reference books, I believe the answer is Smokium,
another of the half fractional elements. The two naturally occuring
isotopes are Ashium and Sootium, both similar in properties to carbon.
Smokium has been theorized since ancient times, but has always been
difficult to isolate in pure form, primarily because every time the
researchers got close enough to the source, the volcano exploded. It is
believed that the first successful isolation occurred on August 27, 1883
on an island in Malaysia. You may have heard of it - Krakatoa. I
believe that the last know words of the researchers involved were "Naw,
the worst is past". Since that time researchers have considered it too
dangerous to work with in very pure form. Fortunately, mixtures of
Smokium, Ashium and Sootium appear to be safe for commercial uses.

We can deduce that Smokium is essential to life. There is a small amount
of Smokium in cigarettes. I can go to the window of my office area and on

a day where it is -20F (a typical Iowa January) with blowing snow and ice,

and see groups of smokers huddled outside. It must be essential to life.
Think about it. George Burns lived to be 100 and he smoked a cigar a day.

Smokium. Smokium is often used quite a bit here in Iowa. We use it to
cure pork chops and turkeys, which is why Iowa smoked pork chops and
smoked turkeys are superior to those found in other states. A little
Smokium goes a long way.

Smokium output is common for most cars but we don't really want it, as
Dave says. You occasionally see a car pulled off the road with the
Smokium rolling out and so no longer functional. In electronics, it is
often a trace constituent in components. Occasionally, we have a
component blow from overvoltage and then the unit does not work because we

have left all of the "magic smoke" out.

I now wait in breathless anticipation to find out how I get disqualified
this week.

Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Question:

The Question:

element. This element is part of most automobiles but we really don't want

to utilize its specific application. This element has two naturally
