At a top tier EMS, there was an AVL for each customer and it could be
unique by product if necessary. Material was allocated by the unique part
number per customer. This kept small orders and specialty customers from
being swallowed by the big fish when there were allocation problems.
Production had to have the parts reallocated to use for a different
customer. It was a top tier company with the required infrastructure.
Customers would commit for 1 or more years of production. Only the
prototypes and the initial runs for new customers were painful from a
documentation side.
