Brokers are a dirty word here. We only use a very small number of brokers we have learned are reputable. All others are avoided at all costs.

And yes, we have seen questionable parts show up in our product coming from CMs. Now more emphasis is having consignment kits rather than turnkey.

Bob:

Unrelated question but...

If CMs are making their money on brokered parts, doesn't this significantly increase the risk of counterfeit parts being injected into the customer's end product? Unless they have a well developed and implemented Counterfeit Part Control Plan.

Hi Again,

AML / AVL , good point.

Working / Managing BOMs with spreadsheets, Oh the Horrors, but yes many folks do it that way.

Often CMs will "Shop Around" trying to get lower prices, I assume every nickel they save on parts goes into their margin? How many cheap suppliers do you want involved?

Many CMs make most of their money on brokering parts so I am not sure how that would work out.

Bob,

Our production CMs have access to our AML database, they can log right in and check only projects they are building. How they match it to their database, I'm not sure. In the case of PCB fabs, our fabs would be unique in their systems anyway. For Proto CMs, we're only doing a few dozen at a time, they may not yet even have full documentation. They often will work from spreadsheets with our AML info added.

Pete

PS: "AML" vs. "AVLl". We're having that internal misunderstanding now. I have 6 manufacturers for this relay, I don't care which distributor gives you the best price. Supply chain is concerned we have too many vendors, we really have a few vendors who source from many manufacturers.
