Hi Phil,

Once upon a time I rebuilt assembly equipment. We did multiple brands and I can tell you the machine manufacturers have failed to come up with anything close to a standard for tooling hole locations, tooling hole diameter, and edge clearance requirements that would work across all machines so there would not be any single panel layout that would be universal.

As a CM I am biased. Our SMT line (Fuji brand) has requirements for tooling hole locations and edge clamping that will be different than most other CM's. For this reason we prefer to do the panelizing. If our customer wants to supply the bare boards we request to have input to any panel layout.

We like larger panels to take advantage of the machines speed and not have as many load/unload operations which is none productive.

As for V-groove, or routed with mouse bites we do both. We prefer the V-groove because it is typically more ridged that a routed panel so it usually works better in an automated line. They also depanel more consistently with our pizza cutter style depaneler.

Subject: [TN] singulation or depanelization of circuit boards

Hi all,

As we move forward we are finding that each Contract Manufacturer wants panelization and depanelization requirements that are unique to them. Part of the problem is we insist on supplying the bare boards due to previous issues with past CMs. Some CMs destroyed boards that were V-grooved, some can't make the mouse bites work. I'm looking for guidance on solving this.

I'd like to be able to send the gerbers to the CM, have them get the panels made, build them, singulate them and ship me "perfect" product. Am I asking too much?
