Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Answer

Hi folks - here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:

This element has 6 naturally occurring isotopes with one being slightly
radioactive. This element was found in a tomb in ancient Egypt at Thebes.
It is impossible to know who discovered this element and there is
controversy on who first recognized it as an element. In the 1700s the
Spanish government tried to ban the use of this element. An anti-cancer
drug is based on this element. What element is being described?

The Answer:

The element is Platinum (Pt)! Platinum was known by ancient civilizations
so it is impossible to determine who discovered it. Many people have
claimed to be the discoverer of the element. Credit is given to Antonio
Ulloa for first bringing Pt to peoples attention when he encountered it in
Panama in 1735. The Spanish government tried to ban Pt because of the
adulteration of gold with it. The Russian government began issuing rouble
coins made from Pt in 1828 but ceased the practice when the cost of the
metal exceeded the value of the coins. A discovery in 1962 by Barnett
Rosenberg lead to a anticancer drug based on Pt that has a cure rate of
greater than 90%.
