Inge,

Like you folks we burned-in in our modules/hybrids before shipping.  

I strongly expect that after being incorporated onto a board, and then into
a sub-system, or system, they were burned-in yet again.  I am very sure the
mentality continued to a FULL, TOTAL system burn-in.

As you say, it is far better to find the infant mortalities before they
leave the ground!

They used to always have 'spares', but not too many, in case of an 'oops' -
or in this case, for back-home analysis

I don't know NASA's routines. European satellites use to be run for  x  hs
before launching, It's  done in order to cut the familiar early failures in
the start of the   'bath tub ' curve. Maybe, whiskers do not grow so
fast in these tests as being in the orbit.
