Hi Sylvain - we have a couple of applications where we solder to manganin 
wire and let's just say it not a fun task! You can use tin/lead solder but 
the key is that you need a highly highly aggressive flux to deal with the 
manganin surface oxides. I recommend you look at fluxes that are designed 
for soldering stainless steel or magnet wire - Indium,  Kester, Alpha, 
etc. all of the solder suppliers offer flux formulations you can choose to 
use. I would also recommend that the flux chemistry be a water soluble 
formulation to aid in the removal of the flux residues/nonactivated flux 
to avoid possible corrosion issues due to inadequate cleaning. Good  luck.

[TN] Soldering manganin wires?






Dear TechNetters,

One of our customer is designing and prototyping some cryogenic 
temperatures measurement assemblies.

As part of the material used, the "temperature sensors" are supposed to be 
connected to the PCB with manganin wires.
The PCB is a flex with ENIG finish.

I never heard about this material before and found it was an alloy mixing 
86% copper, 12% manganese, 2% nickel.

I checked the TechNet archive as well as the internet, but was not 
successful in finding guidelines about soldering those wires.
I found some words on NPL website about copper-manganese alloys : quote 
from website -> Joints between the copper manganese alloys and copper are 
made most effectively by welding in an atmosphere of argon, and by hard 
soldering if welding is impracticable.

On the other hand, I found some papers from some physicists or some 
hobbyist video stating that manganin can be soldered with regular tin-lead 
solder (well, at least they did it on their proto apparatus)...

Provided I can find only very few info and mostly not consistent, I turn 
my eyes on you experts out there.

Does anyone have experience in soldering this material?
Or more precisely, is this material solderable with some regular 
electronic solder alloys?
