Dear All,

Allow me to put this case into perspective before everyone of us mis-quote the intention of this email.

I was given 6pcs of PCBs and some cross-section buttons to inspect. I was told that these PCBs are design using HDI and was asked to perform the inspection in accordance to IPC-A-600 and make reference to IPC-6012 if I encounter problem. As I have completely no experience with HDI PCB including the technology that goes into making it, I have no idea what I am looking for as I stare at those pictures which I randomly took from two of the cross-section buttons. I flipped through the whole IPC-A-600 and 6012 but not able to see any images/pictures that correspond to what I see. Also am I suppose to use 6012 or 6016 to assist in the inspection criteria? I am totally lost and did not know whether those pictures of the microvia are acceptable or defect.

I need all the kind assistance out there to educate me in this case.

Thanks and regards,
~wee mei~

You mean they do not have a quality department taking samples from lots and analyzing them and certifying lots for shipments? May be the per lot analysis is limited to dimensional tolerances but at predetermined intervals they should be checking other attributes too.

These pics are not surprising! Typical I what I see. IMHO, fab houses are too busy with production that QUALITY of process/product is not of concern.

Victor,

Thanks, Steve. I wonder if I missed your posting, Wee Mei? Victor, I got a look at everything twice.

My comments are:

Are these pictures taken from something to be sent to a customer, or from a development project? Customer must define requirements in the former case.

Since A-600 is supposed to be a support for 6012, the latter is to be called out on procurement documents. (This point has been a TechNet topic.)

A table in 6012 early defines plating requirements for blind microvias.

The contribution of 6016, beyond that of 6012, seems to me to be purely in the area of internal registration of microvias. At the 2011 APEX EXPO (I was unable to attend 2012), I heard 6016 is going to be absorbed by 6012. As I've been putting it to people, what we now call 'HDI circuit boards' will soon be called 'circuit boards'.

The first picture, apparently of an etched microvia, shows what seems to be to be a complex sequence of platings. Any comments that would enlighten me are welcome.

Two of the pictures show what appears to be a lenticular dielectric structure between the microvia-filling metal and cap plating. Does this represent some plating resist residue, some ultra-advanced technology, or something else?

Subject: HDI PCB - micro-via

Steve,

I have never inspected any HDI PCBs before and was asked to perform inspection to them in accordance to IPC-A-600 and if necessary IPC-6012. I have no idea what I am looking for as I stare at those pictures which I randomly took from two of the cross-section buttons. I flipped through the whole IPC-A-600 and 6012 but not able to see any images/pictures that correspond to what I see. Also am I suppose to use 6012 or 6016 to assist in the inspection criteria? I am totally lost.

Kindly post the pictures to TechNet so that some kind souls can help me out of this dark tunnel. J

Thanks and regards,

~wee mei~
