You're welcome Jack.

I'll look into the buttons on the archive page.

According to LSOFT, certain postings which are encoded using "Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64", particularly posts sent with Blackberry devices or from Lotus servers can cause problems because the messages are actually Binary as opposed to text, and the Listserv server has a hard time indexing them, or even stops when attempting to index them. The indexing procedure is an important part of the search procedure

Their recommendation was to remove the posts and try indexing Technet again.

While I don't like to alter the archives, in this case I may remove a couple of the posts with " Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64" encoding, for the sake of performance. Strangely enough only the initial message sent with "Encoding: base64" retains it's binary format, replies to the post are in plain ASCII text and cause no further problems with indexing. Since Technet is a very active list, the initial deleted post will likely be referenced in a future reply and the integrity of the list should not be compromised.

Sorry if this is too technical but wanted to explain if anyone notices any minor gaps in the archives after this operation, which I will do over the weekend.

Well, something you did made a difference, because I can get results now.
(thanks for the quick response)

If you look at the TechNet Home Page
http://listserv.ipc.org/scripts/wa.exe?A0=TECHNET
you can see two search-related options in the right column:
- one is a text box with a "search" button,
- the other is a "TechNet Search" link that provides options.

The text box with the button is the one that chokes now.
I was wondering if that button could default to a date range of "TODAY-365" to limit it to the last year (or something) because otherwise, whatever you put in there takes long enough for a server time-out

just a thought...

Jack

As for searching, a general search taxes the server's resources, so the more specific you can be, particularly narrowing the dates, helps bring up the results faster. Because Technet has been around for such a long time and has many postings, archiving and indexing the posts for such a big list taxes the server.
