As the leads are often square or rectangular, you may go for less clearance
vs the hypotenuse as the rest of the clearance can be very large for a flat
pin. I am assuming you are not inserting connectors on a GSM pin in paste.

HASL PCBs were more forgiving as there was a mil or 2 that the sharp
cornered leads would slide in on pin inserters. The copper dia. was the
critical dimension.
