Agggrrrrr, those fricking lawyers make all us crawl back into our shells.
Yet on the other hand, when we write something in our own words based (at
least partially) on our own experience, it is very difficult to prove
copying, plagiarizing, or violating a possible copyright.
So come on guys, get with it!
The only time to be careful is when the subject has been DECLARED a trade
secret by the company you are working for.

Ahne.

Understood. I sure don't want to get into trouble because of anything that I
post...

But if anyone knows anything about me, my intentions have never been to
infringe on anybody's copyright or to personally profit from others
information. My intentions have only been to be a active member of this list
and contribute when I've been able to do so. Maybe in my mind, somehow
repaying (in my own small way) for all the help I have received over the
years from everybody.

My little web page was started back when all we had was text on this forum,
when we needed a place to post images. As it has been said a thousand times
before; "a picture is worth a thousand words..." I thought by starting up a
place that we could use to post things to illustrate what we were trying to
say where words wouldn't be enough, would be a good thing. I pay for my web
page, and have never even given it a second thought because I thought it was
making a positive contribution to the TechNet (I even got a plaque from the
IPC after I started my webpage), but now I don't know anymore.

I can't afford a lawyer to screen and advise me on everything that I post,
so maybe it's time for me to shut it all down and save myself a few
bucks...oh well.

Steve

Brian is right. It is what got Earl Moon into trouble with the IPC.
I could see his point, the data and work was provided to the IPC in the
interest of promoting knowledge in the industry.
But, then again, why should any individual be able to publish that
information for personal profit.
Here, we are not trying to profit but the law still applies.

Just because others violate the copyright does not give you leave to do the
same. If others have the licence to publish on the 'Net, that does not give
you the licence.

In this case, I don't know whether the IPC own the copyright, have licence
to use it in certain ways or whether it belongs to Chris Hunt or, more
likely, the NPL.

A link to a site does not violate copyright any more than I can say that you
can buy a book at Amazon. I own the copyright to my book on Cleaning etc.
and you can purchase a licence to download it from the 'Net, but I would be
very peeved if extracts from it appeared on your website, whether you
purchased a licence or not.
