“We shouldn’t be criticized for using Chinese workers,” a current Apple executive said. “The U.S. has stopped producing people with the skills we need.”

Quite a convenient excuse.  America stopped producing people with those skills because the jobs for those people went overseas, not the other way around.

Would Americans (or Europeans, or any other first world nationals)  live away from their families in dormitories, working 6 12 hours days and eating employer provided pork and rice, for just a few dollars?  

Not that it's equal, but maybe ralatively so:  The argument was also once made that much of America would collapse economically if the tobacco trade were forced to change their employment practices.  I almost wonder if, given today's corporate profit policies, that might have been reason enough to maintain status quo.
