Hmm, This is starting to sound like Bill Clinton trying to define exactly what happened in the oval office.

My understanding is that NASA did not find tin whiskers specifically causing sudden acceleration. However, on a failed position sensor from a Toyota from about 2003, NASA did show a "limp home" failure due to tin whiskers. I think the inference here is that tin whiskers, which definitively showed a different Toyota electrical failure could POSSIBLY cause a sudden acceleration failure. Also, I believe CALCE center at U of Maryland, some 3 miles from NASA Goddard where the tin whiskers exam was done, predicted the ppm failure rate in Toyotas due to tin whiskers.

All that said, I think Toyota changed their pedal position sensor design in 2006 so that the current pedal position sensors happen to be much less sensative to tin whiskers. Hmm, a cost reduction, technological advance, or did Toyota know something concrerning tin whiskers around 2005 or 2006? I haven't seen the "green leaf" symbol much lately on Japanese electronics, compared to 2005.

Denny Fritz.

Subject: Re: [TN] National Research Council report on unintended acceleration released today

According to this article
" The NASA report, released in February 2011, uncovered no conclusive
vidence of an electronic defect that could provoke sudden acceleration
n the electronic throttle system in Toyota vehicles. That finding was
rumpeted by both NHTSA and Toyota as vindication of their previous
ublic conclusions on the matter."
I was pretty sure that NASA's investigation lead to the identification
f tin whiskers that have the potential to produce a failure in the
ensor. In my opinion this article still falls short in notifying the
eneral public of the tin whiskers and the potential impact they could
ave on electronic devices in the automotive industry or otherwise.

I don't think this will come as much surprise, but the National Research
ouncil report on unintended acceleration released today puts the US
HTSA
n the crosshairs. This gives some support to those who felt that NASA's
rue findings were discounted or overlooked in the final NHTSA report.
