Hi Richard - yes, the assessment by George and Andy fills in the gaps on
many questions we had asked. I think that it is interesting that the
parameters resulted in an optical effect. We had our "Barney boards" was a
similar case. I'll have to put this new case in my photo gallery.

Dave

Re: [TN] Strange Gold? (Analysis Done!)

I think this is an excellent report. Very interesting to see the gold
"pushed" in front of the molten solder, concentrating it. George and Andy
are to be congratulated.

Hope this Friday 13th is going well for everyone,

Remember my post from back in November about the strange looking gold? The
one with the purple looking solder?

Well, I got that analyzed by one of our own Technetters; George Wenger.
Him
and his partner Andy Giamis were able to find time in their busy schedule
to
do this for me, for which I'm humbly thankful.

It's pretty interesting. Here's my original post:

Hi All,

Below is a photo of a SON8 footprint that was printed with SAC305 on a
Gold plated PCB and reflowed. I have never seen this before. Is this
"purple
plague"? If it is, exactly what causes it?

I printed up one of the same panels we had the purple solder on with the
same SAC305 paste and reflowed it without parts, and got the same purple
looking solder. So I sent it to George and Andy, and here's the analysis
that they did. It's really good if you ask me.

P.S. Thanks again George and Andy!
