In fact, FEW chelates, which we would nominally call a "chelate", are toxic.
Of course the KING of chelates is EDTA, which is even administered as a drip into the blood stream. Others include Citric Acid, etc. NTA is a cheep version of EDTA, and has some health issues, but, frankly, if I were putttng together a hand wipe to remove Lead, I would use EDTA, and then recommend a water rinse. FYI.

Any wipe that cleans lead residues would have to have chelate on them. What
about any harmful effects of chelate due to skin contact? How do you clean
chelate off the hands?
We use chelate wipes to clean benches/work surfaces if absolutely needed,
but there is always a secondary wipe with alcohol involved to remove the
chelate

My still under-employed comments on the subject are:
1 - I can visualize how wipes may sanitize and/or de-oil the hands
somewhat;
2 and they may remove some lead residues;
3 but I don't see how a wipe could be as effective as a good wash with
running water and soap. I would be surprised if the wipe could keep
metallic residues in suspension without re-depositing on the skin somewhere
else.
Unfortunately, with soap and water, any metallic residue goes down the
drain and then where???
At least the wipes would likely be sequestered in a landfill somewhere.
Shortcuts are not always the best path to take.
On the other hand, if there is a barely detectable amount there in the
first
place, possibly the wipes will reduce it below the delectability threshold.

I just had a chat with one of our ES&H engineers, a very pleasent young
lady, on the topic of hand wipes and lead residues. Was I aware of any
industry studies on the efficiency of hand wipes marketed at removing lead
residues, presumably from contact with cored wire solder? I was not aware
of any. I am always instantly suspicious of ANYTHING that marketers
touch. I am of the opinion that good old fashioned hand washing with soap
and water is as effective as anything, but there are areas here where we
are pretty sure our operators go straight from the bench to lunch without
that step.
So, I turn to my favorite source of information.
1. Are you aware of any industrial hygiene studies regarding
transferrence of lead to the hand, and/or the efficiency of "lead removal
wipes" in removing residues.
2. In your facilities, do you use these kinds of wipes?
3. If not, what measures do you normally use for operators cleaning hands
to remove potentially harmful material?
I will probably discuss this with our crackerjack metallurgist when he
returns from travel tomorrow, but thought I would ask in the mean time.
