Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Answer
Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:
The Question:
This element has no biological role. This element is used to make steel.
This element is used in very expensive luxury cars. This element was a puzzle to chemists/material scientists for a number of years. What element
is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Argon (Ar)! It appears that the clue on "used to make steel" threw many folks off in the wrong direction. Argon is used both to stir molten metal baths and as a blanket gas to control oxidation in the bath. Argon is also used in the tires of expensive luxury cars as it does not degrade the rubber (compared to oxygen) and results in less noise when moving. Argon, element 18, confused chemists and material scientists as it appeared to be too heavy for its place in the Periodic Table. Argon, element 18, is heavier than Potassium, element 19, due to its isotropic distribution - Ar is primarily comprised of argon-40 with 18 proton/22 neutrons whereas potassium is primarily comprised of potassium-39 with 19 protons/20 neutrons.
The winner of the weekly element quiz is Reuven Rokah so Clumpy and Kloumpios are ready to jump on their John Deere's and get going after the holiday break.
