Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:
The Question:
This element has no biological role. This element, combined with another
metal, is extremely good at absorbing hydrogen gas and is being
investigated for hydrogen storage applications. This element, when used in
floodlighting, gives an emission spectrum almost identical to sunlight.
This element has two naturally occurring isotopes. What element is being
described?
The Answer:
The element is Lanthanum (La)! The alloy LaN5 has been shown to absorb as
much as 400X its own weight in hydrogen. Many folks were guessing
palladium which also is very good at hydrogen absorption but Pd has 6
naturally occurring isotopes and not two. La is used as the core material
in several lighting applications due to its emission spectrum. Lanthanum
is also being used in a medical treatment for hyperphosphataemia (a
condition where the blood contains too much phosphate due to kidney
issues)as it combines with phosphates in the stomach preventing them from
being introduced into the body.
The winner of the weekly element quiz is Rex Waygood, Hansatech EMS, and
he will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week. Rex - let
me know where your facility is located so the boys can get their trip
