My first questions would be a list of important attributes> Examples:
1. Dense Storage and utilization of space.
2. Quick Retrieval
I write software for a large provider of proto assembly services. We will do
maybe 10 to 20 different jobs a day. Talk about a lot of stencils. Also, we
merge a number of jobs onto single 20 x 20 stencils. This saves big $ but
adds confusion.
My solution:
First you have JOB IDs where EVERY new job gets a new ID. Stencils come in
and they are divided into 3 categories, Small, Medium and Large. Each
stencil gets an ID like S-102345, M-345634 or L-234567 and this stencil
number goes on a label which is on the stencil. The numbers are always
sequential. We have different sized shelves for each of the three sizes as
this improves storage density. The job numbers on a stencil are recorded
using <jobid>-X where X is T or B for Top or Bottom.
When an operator needs a stencil for a job the JOB-ID locates the Stencil
ID. That stencil might be on the "Recent Shelf" or it might have been moved
back to "Main Storage". At any time old stencils can be purged if there has
been no build using that stencil for the last 6 months.
