Pete, yes the new software are getting better and more complex. The layout is getting more in-mature (or just out of school), many of the mistakes get caught and wouldn't spin to finalize. Few (ok ok, may be in the whole world, more than few) just disable the rule check, or not import the rules established from years of experience, use incompatibility as excuse. I need a drink to cool down (coffee wouldn't do, not even famous Dew).

Subject: Re: [TN] QFP center slug over signal vias

What's the cost of the workaround? Could it be more than they saved by not hiring an actual PCB designer, who (shuold have) known not to do that in the first place?

Part of this problem is the increased caopabilities of software. Who needs designers when you can push the autoroute button? Too bad the salespeople never told the engineering manager that he still needs someone who knows to put a via keepout under the QFN.

This will only get worse as there are fewer PC designers.

We hired a new VP of R&D. One of his first alarms was that I, a PCB designer with 25 years experience, was making more than his young engineers - they have EE's, I must be overpaid. Lucky for me, word leaked, a number of engineers went to bat for me and educated him. But he still refuses to pay for any continuing education for me. So I have to do it on my own. (this place has been invaluable!)

OK, down off the soapbox.

Sodlermask is NOT an insulator, watch that board start failing if anything changes in the current mask process. A re-spin might be cheaper and safer. Especially considering, if you have signal vias under a QFN, there's probablay a lot of other problems that could be fixed and some cost saving opportunities.

Pete
