Hi Gregg,

What I understood you said was that the NASA-STD8739.1 said that any MIL-I-46058 qualified conformal coating is acceptable, which is not true.

Thanks for clarifying.

Here's how you do it.

Go to: http://www.assistdocs.com/search/search_basic.cfm

In the second text field, DOCUMENT NUMBER, type in: 46058 and then click the SUBMIT button.

At the results page click on the QPL-46058-87 NOT 1 link

At the page that comes up click on the View QPD Data link that's in the Revision History section

In the resulting windows that come up, you'll get to pick what kind of conformal coating you wish to query for:

Type AR is for Acrylic based conformal coatings
Type ER is for Epoxy based conformal coatings
Type SR is for Silicone based conformal coatings
Type UR is for Urethane based conformal coatings
Type XY is for Parylene based conformal coatings

Hi Gregg,

Actually the NASA-STD-8739.1A with Change 2 specifies:

1.2 Applicability

This publication is applicable to NASA programs involving polymeric applications for flight

hardware, mission critical ground support equipment, and elements thereof and wherever

invoked contractually.

By the way, I could not find the reference you mention to the MIL-I-46058. Can you please point me to it? You can download the current document at:

http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/codeq/doctree/87391.htm

I was holding my reply to Gregg because I was doing a little bit of research. I am not finished but here is what I could find. I could not find anywhere in the standard a reference to any "approved" conformal coatings per say. I did find however, on Table 10-1 on page 52 the Conformal Coating Thickness values for different Conformal Coatings. As said, it doesn't say that they are approved.

One question for Gregg Owens,

The spec lists the characteristics that the conformal coating must comply with. Also, that the NASA Center will approve it. The question is, Are you building or planning to build hardware for a specific NASA Center? If so, that center will have a Materials group which can provide you with a list of materials being currently used by that center.

I work at the Goddard Space Flight Center. If you tell me the center you are working or planning to work with I can guide you to the right group.

I hope this helps.

Gregg,

If you do a Google search for "NASA conformal coating", you'll find a NASA document, NASA-STD-8739.1 titled, WORKMANSHIP STANDARD FOR STAKING AND CONFORMAL COATING OF PRINTED WIRING BOARDS AND ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLIES. It doesn't specifically say it's for flight hardware so I'd want to make sure it was applicable, but it says that any MIL-I-46058 qualified conformal coating is acceptable. Although MIL-I-46058 is inactive, the QPL-46048 is still active. You can search for qualified materials at:

http://www.assistdocs.com/search/search_basic.cfm

It takes some time to figure out how to get to the QPL database. Feel free to ask for help if you need it.

Gregg

Dear TechNetters:

I have returned to SpaceX and have been posed a question which some of you should have quick answers for (obviously not a Doug "It depends" question).

'

What are the NASA approved conformal coatings for spaceflight? I was hoping to find a list in the NASA-STDs but didn't find a list. Replies are most appreciated.

Thanks,

Gregg Owens
