Steve,

When you say "gold plated PCB" do you mean standard ENIG or is this an electrolytic plated gold PCB?  If I had the board in my hand the first thing I would do is make three XRF measurements; One on the lower right corner of the center square on the PCB surface that isn't wet with solder, another in the center of one of the four center areas that isn't discolored and a third on a discolored area.  I think that would be a good non-destructive start and might provide some useful results

Below is a photo of a SON8 footprint that was printed with SAC305 on a gold
plated PCB and reflowed. I have never seen this before. Is this "purple
plague"? If it is, exactly what causes it?
