Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Answer

Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:

This element has 5 naturally occurring isotopes. This element will burn in

a nitrogen atmosphere. This element is found in lipstick. A pure sample of

this element was not produced until 1910. What element is being described?

The Answer:

The element is Titanium (Ti)! M.A. Hunter, General Electric, produced the first pure sample of Ti by heating titanium tetrachloride and sodium metal under high pressure in a seal vessel which yielded a 99.8% pure sample.
Titanium burning in a nitrogen atmosphere produces titanium nitride. The biggest use of Ti is as the compound titanium dioxide which is used everywhere - even in lipstick. The first titanium mineral was discovered in 1791 by Reverend William Gregor in Cornwall England. If he had been successful in isolating Ti as an element (he was unable to do so), he was going to use the name menaccin.

The winner of the weekly element quiz is Patrick Goodyear, PGE, and will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios again for a week. Last week he had them on the beach so they are looking forward to another week at his facility.
