Hi John,

We find that reliability testing is frequently required as part of the acceptance process. It would be prudent to simulate assembly and rework on a representative coupon. We typically test coupons "as received", after three thermal excursions to simulate assembly and six thermal excursions to simulate assembly and rework. We expect the greater the thermal excursion the less thermal cycles to failure. If there is a great reduction (poor interconnections) or and increase (material damage) in the cycles to failure we investigate further before the vender is qualified,

I think that a reliability test that includes assembly process must be part if the investigation for qualifying a bare board supplier. Then frequently a reliability test, not as thorough as the qualification test, is implemented for on going product procurement.

Best regards,

Paul Reid

Subject: [TN] Qualification of PWB Suppliers...

All,

Does Final Assembly and Functional Testing add value to Qualifying Bare
Board PWB Suppliers?

Put another way...is a Supplier's Continuity/Isolation/Controlled Z
Testing, and their Customer's Inspection of the Physical Product to its
Documentation, sufficient to Qualify the Supplier without additional
Assembly or Functional Testing?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences with this.
