It depends if you rout traces between the pads. We do and have settled on a round pad and aperture since we then can bring them closer. For our square pads we use both round apertures and the so called home plate. Both of these have done well in eliminating tomb stoning. If the distance beteween the two pads is according to the IPC spec. (I forget the number) I think this is 16 mil then I believe round apertures give the best release.
