Phil:

Bees wax may contain organic contaminates which in the right operating environments may cause a contamination issue. That's why it's only a class 3 issue.

Subject: [TN] Lacing tape

I discovered that we are using lacing tape which is wax impregnated to
tie off cabling.

IPC-A-610 states in section 4.4.1: "Note: Do not subject wax
impregnated lacing tape to cleaning solvents. Beeswax is unacceptable
for Class 3."

I have been asked to find out the reason for this restriction.

My immediate answer is that we don't want to take a chance of
re-depositing wax (a contaminant) onto other surfaces that may require
conformal coating or possible onto conductive surfaces such as connector
contacts, switch contacts, etc.

Is there another possible reason?

We don't expose the lacing tape to solvents, but it is beeswax
impregnated so my recommendation is to have Production go buy the
unwaxed lacing tape that is available.

Many lives ago I experimented with making thermoplastic potting
compounds from synthetic polyolefins from Eastman and learned quite a
bit about "wax". But I don't know the reason why beeswax is prohibited
other than stated above.

Thanks in advance,

Phillip Bavaro
