RMA fluxes that passed the Bellcore compliant "leave behind" tests were used for many many years by Western Electric / AT&T / Bell Labs / Lucent Technologies for high reliability telecommunication products with great success. The only time you have problems with RMA flues is when you try and clean them and don't do a good job of cleaning them. Solder with them and "leave them behind" (i.e., don't clean).

George

Subject: Re: [TN] Rookie question on RMA fluxes

As my neurons warm up I recall:

I loved RMA, great flux and non-corrosive. If it "Got Stuck" under
components no big deal. Get OA trapped under parts with vias and it is all
over in 5 years or less.

My issue with cleaning was we wound up doing 2 cleaning cycles. The first
was after wave or reflow. This got the board clean so it could be easily
handled. After rework we cleaned again. We were building board level
products so they had to "Look Good" which meant no spots of flux where THT
or touch up had been performed by hand.

We used OA for THT and rework which cleaned up in plain water fine.

Ioan,
We use RMA flux on a regular basis. Would you be using it on SMT and/or
wave?.....as phil mentioned, RMA flux needs to be cleaned in a saponified
wash. Alcohol is a very bad de-fluxer in general and should not be used on
RMA fluxes. In case of spot/hand cleaning, we use the Ensolv aerosol
cleaner.

Ioan,

"Flux for Dummies" version;

RMA flux works just fine with the correct processing. If you are locked in
to the RMA, then cleaning will best be done with a saponifier in a water
wash system. Alcohol only does a good job of diluting the flux and
spreading it over the entire board.

Water soluble flux (OA) will work just fine, but again with the appropriate
wash and dry.

My engineers were leery of OA flux until I produced boards that were cleaner
than we had ever gotten. Now it is all they will accept.

I am sure there are some of our TechNet friend out there that can give a
much more detailed response.

Phil Nutting

Subject: [TN] Rookie question on RMA fluxes

Dear Technos,

Although I've been around in this trade of ours for quite a while now, I
have never had the occasion to work with RMA fluxes. I need to know how this
functions. How can RMA be cleaned, I've heard about alcohol...? Is regular
aqueous wash enough? If alcohol only, do we need a special equipment?
Anything else to know?

And, anyways, are RMA fluxes still available?

Also, I imagine most of you at ease with RMA have tried to talk your
customers into converting to water soluble flux chemistries. How hard was
that? Is it possible?

Thanks,

Ioan Tempea, ing.
