And Dorn was at the University of Halle-Wittenberg....but I still think Bev deserves this one.

I'll give it a stab.
Radon was originally discovered in France by the Curies in 1899, but credit was given to Friedrich Dorn in Germany in 1900.

Hi folks - astatine is not the correct element - the correct element is Radon but the Friday Element Quiz Rule Arbitration Committee (FEQRAC) has taken issue with Bev's response as he appeared to be providing two answers and hedging his bets. So the winner of the Friday Element Quiz will be whomever provides the correct bonus question answer first. The FEQRAC also noted Bev was still eligible for that portion of the task. Good Luck.

Re: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question
Well I consider this one another tuffy.
Radioactive elements? That's the easy part:
Technetium
Polonium
Astatine
Radon
Francium
Radium
Actinium
Thorium
Protactinium
Uranium
Neptunium
And then the new ones, usually man-made.
I know technetium, radium (watches), thorium and uranium (have used UF6
myself)are long lived, leaving:
Polonium
Astatine
Radon
Francium
Actinium
Protactinium
Neptunium
And then new ones, usually man-made.
Then looking each up in Wikipedia and NIST for isotopes and half lives:
Long half life # of isotopes
Polonium 103 years 33
Astatine hours 31
Radon 3.8 days 34
Francium 21.8 minutes 34
Actinium 21 years 31
Protactinium 32,760 years 29
Neptunium years
And then new ones, usually man-made. 20 or
less (found so far)
So, it looks like astatine is the answer, which is what Thomas A. Carroll
suggested. However, I'm still going to guess radon, since it says in
Wikipedia: "Although colorless at standard temperature and pressure, when
cooled below its freezing point of 202 K (?71 ?C; ?96 ?F), radon has a
brilliant phosphorescence which turns from yellow to orange-red as the
temperature is lowered." I will assume that for Dave 91.2 hours is still
"a few" and he has an old source that only lists 31 isotopes instead of
34. If I'm wrong, well it has been fun anyways.

Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question
Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Question:
The Question:
This element is highly unstable and very dangerous due to its intense
radioactivity. This element has 31 isotopes but none have a half life of
more than a few hours. When this element is cooled below its freezing
point, it phosphoresces brightly. What element is being described?
Bonus question: Name the country where this element was initially
discovered, and name the university/country who is given credit for the
discovery of the element.
The winner of the weekly element quiz will get the services of Clumpy and
Kloumpios for the week.
So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have:
