Well, that is very much an "it depends" kind of question. There are some
fluxes that perform well if you completely clean the residues, or if you
leave them completely alone. If you "sort of" clean them, you can have a
combination of cleaning chemical and flux residue that is undesirable.

If you have a solvent based cleaning system, are your flux residues
designed for solvent cleaning? If so, great. If not, then you may not be
getting all the cleaning you think you are getting.

Yes, you should benchmark how well your cleaning system is doing, but I
would not choose the bulk ionic cleanliness testers to do so. I prefer
ion chromatography to do that testing. But if the ionic cleanliness
testers are all that you have, then you might consider doing modified ROSE
testing (IPC-TM-650, method 2.3.25.1) which gives you the better
extraction of the IC method, but you can use your cleanliness tester that
you have.

Re: [TN] Flux Compatibility

Do you agree that in case fluxes interact badly we can prevent
SIR/electromigration issue by cleaning the board ?

Perhaps it wasn't clear on my email but these products are 100% cleaned
(solvent process).

So we should just have to check that the cleaning process is efficient
measuring ionic contamination, don't we ?

Cedric

Objet : Re: [TN] Flux Compatibility

Some flux materials don't play well with others, possibly resulting in low
SIR and Electrochemical migration., and compatibility testing helps to
ensure that combinations of materials work well together. I test many
combinations of Alpha materials for SIR and ECM. So do Kester and Indiujm
for their respective materials, The compatibility testing may have
already
been done by your paste and flux supplier; ask them if they have data.

Good morning dear Technetters,

I'm asked by one of my customer if I checked the compatibility between in
one hand the no-clean flux from the SMD paste and the other hand the resin
flux from the wires.

The answser was no !

Could you advise which kind of issue could occur if any ?

Thanks for your help,

Regards,

Cedric
