Greg, everything is an "it depends" situation.

There are many different ways in which material and process compatiblity
can be demonstrated. Two widely accepted methods are to use J-STD-001D,
Appendix C, or to use the new IPC-9202 protocol. Both are available from
the IPC. The 9202 is being printed now and should be available any day
now. It just passed ballot earlier this month. I hope to have the
companion IPC-9203 document, which explains 9202, done by the end of the
year. Then I may launch into IPC-9204, which explains the 9203. Maybe
not.

Subject
[TN] "Compatibility" testing of fluxes

J-STD-001 states that fluxes with activity levels of L0 and L1 shall be
used but other fluxes with other activity levels may be used as long as
data is available "demonstrating compatibility". Are there any standard
"compatibility" tests or is this another one of those "it depends"
situations.
