It is a really complicated problem Cedric.
If the board has been fluxed with a combination of agents and carriers the
result can be very difficult to remove.
So, the cleaning process might not provide the results needed to prevent
electrochemical migration, even a solvent cleaning process.
And no, the methods commonly used to measure ionic contamination are not
assurance that your cleaning process is adequate, especially when fluxing
agents have been mixed without regard for the subsequent cleaning process.
Here I am speaking of the various R.O.S.E. test results. They are best used
to verify that your validated cleaning process has not changed.

Subject: Re: [TN] Flux Compatibility
Do you agree that in case fluxes interact badly we can prevent
SIR/electromigration issue by cleaning the board ?
Perhaps it wasn't clear on my email but these products are 100% cleaned
(solvent process).
So we should just have to check that the cleaning process is efficient
measuring ionic contamination, don't we ?

Cedric

Objet : Re: [TN] Flux Compatibility
Some flux materials don't play well with others, possibly resulting in low
SIR and Electrochemical migration., and compatibility testing helps to
ensure that combinations of materials work well together. I test many
combinations of Alpha materials for SIR and ECM. So do Kester and Indiujm
for their respective materials, The compatibility testing may have already
been done by your paste and flux supplier; ask them if they have data.

Please respond to TechNet E-Mail Forum, Cedric ORAIN
Good morning dear Technetters,
I'm asked by one of my customer if I checked the compatibility between in
one hand the no-clean flux from the SMD paste and the other hand the resin
flux from the wires.
The answser was no !
Could you advise which kind of issue could occur if any ?
Thanks for your help,
Regards,
Cedric
