Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:

This element can be machined without sparking but as a pure metal is 
completely useless as it corrodes rapidly. No pure samples of this element 

were produced until 1950 as it required ion-exchange chromatography 
technique. This element is used in the production of the industry's best 
permanent magnets. What element is being described?

Bonus question: Who developed the ion-exchange chromatography technique as 

it applies to this element and what is the name of the University where 
the development happened? (both names are necessary for credit)

The Answer:

The element is Dysprosium (Dy)! Dysprosium is one of the rare earth 
elements that is key in the production of the best kinds of permanent 
magnets - Dy and Holmium have the highest magnetic strengths of any 
elements. Dy is combined with neodymium in many magnet alloys. Dy is also 
found in some ceramics such as barium titanium oxide for capacitors with 
high capacitance. Frank Spedding at Iowa State University developed ion 
exchange chromatography to produce pure Dy in 1950. The ion exchange 
technique was then applied to other rare earth element production (such as 
samarium which Denny Fritz and Curt McNamara suggested as the quiz 
answer). I completed my undergrad and grad studies at Iowa State 
University and many of my professors worked with Dr. Spedding - so this 
quiz had a personal twist!
