Hi Curt - nope, but everyone is on the right track looking at the Rare
Earth elements. The Friday Quiz will close at 3:00 PM CST so there is
still time to sleuth. The key clue is the link of who first used
ion-exchange chromatograph to produce a pure sample of the element in the
quiz.

Dave

Hi Denny - hummmm, I may have made this one too tough as I have yet to see
a correct response for the element quiz. This may be a first for the
Friday Quiz - no correct element answers? Looks like Clumpy and Kloumpios
may be spending the week at your place.

Dave

Re: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question

Hmm, after six more hours since this was posted, guess I scared off
everyone else. I see that samarium is also present in the monazite
mineral, as well as neodymium. samaium also makes awfully good permanent
magnets. So, by process of elimination, I guess it has to be samarium.

Hi Denny! Well, you have the bonus question correct but I suggest further
investigation/sleuthing on the element - neodymium is not correct.

Lindsay was the first to commercialize large-scale ion-exchange
purification of neodymium, using the technology developed by Frank
Spedding at Iowa State University/Ames Laboratory;

I knew it just HAD TO BE your alma mater!!

Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question

Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Question (this one may be
ifficult):
The Question:
This element can be machined without sparking but as a pure metal is
ompletely useless as it corrodes rapidly. No pure samples of this element
ere produced until 1950 as it required ion-exchange chromatography
echnique. This element is used in the production of the industry's best
ermanent magnets. What element is being described?
Bonus question: Who developed the ion-exchange chromatography technique as

t applies to this element and what is the name of the University where
he development happened? (both names are necessary for credit)

here quiz winner will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios. And the
riday Element Quiz Rules Arbitration Board has determined that if we get
split answer as occurred last week with Robert and Graham, Clumpy and
loumpios have to do tasks at both facilities. It is rumored that Clumpy
nd Kloumpios were much happier assisting Robert than Graham (something
bout furnishment of cold beverages as part of that task).

o far Clumpy and Kloumpios have:
Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings

Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
Solderability testing and mowed the lawn
