I too work in California. We do not use IPA, we use grain alcohol, 200 proof, food grade, un-denatured, the real stuff. Just have to be careful with it and use it in a VERY WELL ventilated areas, and take breaks. We have to pay fed and state taxes on the stuff, does a much better job of cleaning and NO residue.

I work in California but we still use IPA for our manual cleaning.
Even when it comes to spraying conformal coat, our annual volumes consumed leave us below the regulations requiring all the controls and permits.
I suppose this is one of the benefits of working in the high dollar low volume defense industry.
I still miss the good old days of freon and toluene!

Too late I live/work in California.
Beyond our budget problems, environmental issues have and will continue to force business AWAY from California. In our plant we are forced to use acetone as a general cleaning solvent rather than isopropyl alcohol due to environment restrictions imposed by a local environmental/government agency (again politics over science - don't get me started!). I agree with Mike - jump on this with both feet, while you can!

Not sure if any of you have been following this, but the US EPA is proposing lowering the ozone emissions limit cap to 25 grams/liter in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. This is in line with the California rules, and what we are hearing is that most cleaning chemistries that are formulated special for California manufacturers are not as robust as ones used in other locales. The EPA says lowering the limits will cut healthcare costs by $120 billion to $290 billion a year by 2014 - or more than 10% of the total annual US health care spend. (Just the range in that estimate suggests some serious drug ingestion on the part of those responsible, in my opinion.) Frankly, I would be more concerned that the major defense contractors all move to Texas.
There is a meeting near BWI Airport in early September. I strongly suggest you forward this info to your company environmental compliance officer(s) and make sure they submit comments and/or attend.
