You may be able to limit wicking by control of solder volume through use of a properly sized solder preform.

Subject: [TN] Solder Wicking

Technetters:

I have a unique application question. We have a part which is to be attached to the PCB by a wire. The wire is stranded 22AWG and is only 450 mils long. The assembly's operational environment has vibration. Therefore it is critical for the wire to minimize solder wicking and remain as flexible as possible. However the short length presents quite a challenge. So other than a anti-wicking tool does anyone have any great ideas to limit solder wicking in such an application?

I was thinking of suggesting using un-fluxed solder wick to improve flexibility. Any additional thoughts? Thanks!
