Victor,

I believe the hardest part with respect to using any of these tubing cutters
will be in rotating the device within the cutter itself. You may end up
having to manually rotate the rollers to make the TO-5 go around.

This is easy enough to do when cutting tubing ... where typically a
substantial portion of tubing is available to hold on to, but we don't have
that in this case.

Wish we could find the old can opener you originally asked for!!

Here is a link http://www.toolbarn.com/reed-034mc.html to give you a
idea of what they look like.

There is a smaller tube cutter used for cutting steel brake lines. You
can pick it up at your local auto parts store. It has a smaller cutting
and guide wheel to handle the smaller diameter break lines.

Victor,

To follow through with Dave's idea - take a peek at these pics. I
believe
that I could modify my cutter rollers in about an hour - a bit longer if
the
rollers were hardened. Definitely would want to take some of the excess
'play' out of the cutter guide assembly.

Definitely works for a T0-5, but won't work for some of the optical
TO-92's,
or power TO-3's etc. Not what I had used in the past, but if you don't
have
too many to open and you can not locate a ready-made one .... it may be
worth a try.

PS - I am not pro or con on this particular tubing cutter. Just happens
to
be the one I recently purchased when my old one finally stopped cutting
properly. This one is nice, however, because the cutting wheel assembly
is
easily dis-assembled.

I believe that I picked this up at Lowe's or Menards {Home Improvement
Centers}
