Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:
The Question:
This element has limited but specialized commercial uses. An artificially
produced radioactive isotope of this element, which has a half life of 84
days, is used in oil refineries to monitor the movement of various
fractions as oil is refined. A pure sample of this element was first
produced in 1937 by electrolysis at 800C. There is no geological process
to concentrate this element and is widely distributed in many types of
rock (800 minerals so far). What element is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Scandium (Sc). Scandium precipitates from water -even a pH
7 water - so the element is found in many ore bodies. When Scandium iodide
is added to mercury vapor lights, the harsh light is changed to a more
natural light which founds use in filming and outdoor sports arenas.
Scandium was added to cricket bats resulting in superior striking power
but this was deemed "unsportsmanlike" and prohibited.
