Very logical indeed Steve
There is no justification whatsoever for lead-free

Okay, let's put aside all the reliability, environmental, and other issues
aside for a moment and just talk about dollars...I think that is logical,
right?

Everybody knows that tin prices are the main driving force behind what you
pay for solder. So let's explore tin prices for a bit. In June 2001 tin spot
price on the London Metal Exchange was $4,829.90 per metric ton, the price
has now risen 428.37% to $25,519.68. PT Timah, based in Pangkalpinang,
Indonesia, will post a 55% profit gain this year, analysts' estimates
compiled by Bloomberg show. Solder represents 52% of the demand. This year,
global demand for tin may rise 0.5 percent to an all-time high of 366,000
tons, exceeding supply by 6,000 tons, Barclays Capital estimates. Demand for
electronic goods is accelerating. Global sales of mobile-phone handsets will
rise about 12 percent to about 1.8 billion units this year, Gartner Inc., a
Stamford, Connecticut- based researcher, said in a May report. Shipments of
tablet computers will advance 12-fold from 2010 to 2015, IHS iSuppli, an El
Segundo, California-based researcher, said in February.

The average metal content of ore is declining because richer deposits are
now exhausted, Mohd. Ajib Anuar, group chief executive officer of Malaysia
Smelting Corp., the country's biggest producer, said in an interview in
January. Mining companies are removing twice as much waste as they did two
decades ago to get to the ore, he said. Past surveys have indicated that
existing world tin reserves were sufficient for the next 20 to 25 years.
Estimates of tin production have historically varied with the dynamics of
economic feasibility and the development of mining technologies, but it is
estimated that, at current consumption rates and technologies, the Earth
will run out of tin that can be mined in 40 years. However, Lester Brown
(author of Plan B: Mobilizing to Save Civilization) has suggested tin could
run out within 20 years based on an extremely conservative extrapolation of
2% growth per year.

Now let's look at silver. In June 2001 silver spot price on the London Metal
Exchange was $4.90 per troy ounce, the price has now risen 720.51% to
$35.84.

The above statistics are just for 10 years. Solder prices may not be of a
concern now, but what about in the future?

63/37 solder may start looking a little better when the tin supply becomes
tighter and the price becomes higher. Right now 63/37 is about 1/2 the cost
of SAC 305.

With respect to Lead in electronics, there are few precedents for a logical
response to a logical campaign.
"All lead is bad, ban it" generally out weighs "Better, cheaper, safer,
reliable, keep it"
Were you to take up the cause you would most likely be dismissed as
unqualified and speaking for vested industrial interests.
Suggest forgetting it and getting on with your life, which is what I now
propose to do!
:)

Mike

Ok, so here's the next question: Can we go back? Could there be a viable
marketing (and legislative) campaign based on something like: "Responsible
Lead Use: Better Products, Better Safety, Better for the Environment!"
