Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question

Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Question (this one may be
difficult):

The Question:

This element can be machined without sparking but as a pure metal is
completely useless as it corrodes rapidly. No pure samples of this element
were produced until 1950 as it required ion-exchange chromatography
technique. This element is used in the production of the industry's best
permanent magnets. What element is being described?

Bonus question: Who developed the ion-exchange chromatography technique as
it applies to this element and what is the name of the University where
the development happened? (both names are necessary for credit)

There quiz winner will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios. And the
Friday Element Quiz Rules Arbitration Board has determined that if we get
a split answer as occurred last week with Robert and Graham, Clumpy and
Kloumpios have to do tasks at both facilities. It is rumored that Clumpy
and Kloumpios were much happier assisting Robert than Graham (something
about furnishment of cold beverages as part of that task).

So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have:

Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
