Hi,

 In a past life I repaired instruments in college and power resistors in
PCBs were a big problem. The leads get hot and any vibrations causes stress
in the connections. I saw intermittent operations in VT-52 DEC terminals and
some instruments in the chemistry department. You would see failed solder
joints where the leads had become loose in the holes. 

 A big question is how long are the leads and are they made of iron or
copper.  Non-copper leads don't conduct heat a well so the solder joints are
not as hot. I have also seen little metal tabs crimped on the leads that
provide both lead cooling and mechanical support.  

 Just a thought.

Where is the requirement for power resistors to be installed above the PWB
surface?  I thought it was in J-STD-001, but I can't find it.
