Hi Gary,

I doubt that anything we have done (or have been put through) in the
electronics industry, has made any difference whatsoever to anyone from the
hazards of lead.

I say that because our industry's use of lead is so miniscule that it is not
ever mentioned in any global use statistic. By far, the biggest user is
battery manufacturers which is 80% of the global use of lead.

Look at this link:

http://www.ilzsg.org/static/home.aspx

Click on the "Statistics" in the top bar of the page, the on then "End Uses"
link at the left hand side of the page, and you can see that electronics or
solder didn't even make the pie chart. We're probably in the fraction of a
percent somewhere in the miscellaneous wedge.

I also invite you to explore the rest of the site, look at some of the
presentations, and you can see for yourself that the global use of lead has
increased dramatically...and I would bet that it's not because of solder or
electronics. Look at this presentation:

http://www.ilzsg.org/generic/pages/file.aspx?file_id=1063&field_name=document
aa_file_id_0

and scroll down and look at the chart for World Lead Refinery Capacity
Changes.

You tell me, has our switch to lead free in electronic solder made any
measurable benefit to anyone's health and safety?

Steve

For all of the debate on the performance of lead-free, the question remains:
For all of the billions spent on process changes to eliminate lead, has
there been any measurable benefit in health and safety?

Gary
