I am curious Bev. What source do you use to get current prices for these
rare elements?

Re: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question
Aha! Mike Fenner is right, I am wrong. I had a mistake in logic. When I
was talking about discovery dates, I should have eliminated Tb and Re, NOT
the other way around, leaving (with prices)
Sc 1937 $6750/kg, 1991, 99.999% purity
Rb 1860s $45,000/kg, 1997, 99.8% purity
Y 1828 $69/kg, 2002, 99.9% purity
Cs 1860s $10,000, 99.8% purity
Gd 1886 $220/kg, 2011, 99%
Tl 1860s $~1200, 1998, ?
So, Brian Ellis nailed it.
Red-faced
Bev

Subject: Re: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question
This is a tuffy.
If it wasn't produced pure until 1928, then we can eliminate any elements
discovered after that time, thus out go all the elements after uranium,
plus
Tc, Pm, At and Fr.
If it is like sodium, then if we presume a +1 oxidation state, that gives
us:
H, Li, B, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni,
Cu, Ga, Ge, Br, Rb, Y, Zr, Mo, Ru, Rh, Ag, In, I, Cs, Gd, Tb, W, Re, Os,
Ir,
Au, Hg, Tl
If we then eliminate the ones with a known biological role (I presume in
humans), then we are left with:
Al, Si, Sc, V, Ga, Ge, Br, Rb, Y, Zr, Ru, Rh, Ag, In, Cs, Gd, Tb, W, Re,
Os,
Ir, Au, Hg, Tl
If we then eliminate those that I would consider to have SIGNIFICANT use
in
industry we are left with:
Sc, Rb, Y, Cs, Gd, Tb, Re, Tl
Discovery dates
Sc 1937
Rb 1860s
Y 1828
Cs 1860s
Gd 1886
Tb "not until ion exchange"
Re 1928
Tl 1860s
So it looks like it is down to Tb and Re.
But $
Tb $3400/kg
Re $4000/kg
But Pt is $1700/troy ounce.
I'm stuck!
Bev

Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question
Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Question:
The Question:
This element is used for research purposes only. There are no commercial
outlets for the element as Sodium can be used to accomplish the same tasks
at a much lower cost. This element is more expensive than gold or platinum
(*** per my reference source). A pure sample of this element was not
produced until 1928. Apples contain 50 ppm of this element but plays has
no known biological role.
Bonus Question: Name the mineral that contains this element.
The quiz winner will get to put Clumpy and Kloumpios to work for them for
the week.
So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have:
Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
- accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)
Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
- conducted REACH material testing
Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
- Solderability testing and mowed the lawn
Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
- had an epic journey of travel
Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
- unknown
Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
- unknown
Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
- Were tackling dummys for Dallas Cowboys
Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
- Cleaned gutters and painted window trim
Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division
- unknown
Week 9 Steve Gregory of RD Circuits
- unknown
Week 10 David Bealer of Watchfire Signs
- descaled the in-line wash machine! Ouch!
Week 11 Dick Krug of Sparton Corporation
- assisted with AS9100 quality management systems requirements audit
Week 12 Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise Solutions
- Acted as Steve's "go fer" due to a broken leg!
Week 13 Gebhard Neifer, Delphi
- conducted a plasma pre treatment Taguchi DOE for a sealing process
Week 14 Bev Christian, RIM
- assisted with a tin pest investigation/test
Week 15 Bev Christian, RIM
- assisted Bev shoveling snow
Week 16 David Bealer of Waatchfire Signs
- assisted with reflow profiling
Week 17 Brian Ellis, rumored to be retired
- assisted with rewiring the house, had a tractor accident and found
his cousin Kloumpios
Week 18 Denny Fritz, SAIC
- assisted with tin whisker inspection/examinations
Week 19 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
- assisted with scraping barnacles, boat paint and boat engine
maintenance
Week 20 Mark Woolley, PTRL Laboratory Avaya
- assisted with weather observations (70F to snow) and resolving
electrochemical migration failures
Week 20 Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense, Space and Security
- assisted with commercial aircraft galley inspection
Week 21 Brian Ellis, supposedly retired, and Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense,
Space and Security
- assisted with root cause corrective action tasks
- assisted with nothing but catching up with the family
Week 22 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
- assisted with metallographic cross-sections and Dye & Pry testing
Week 23 Bev Christian, RIM
- assisted with a creep corrosion project and the setting up of an oxygen
bomb
Week 24 Steve Gregory, RD Circuits
- assisted with ?????
Week 25 Ahne Oosterhof, A-Laser
- assisted with stencil aperture data analysis and split/stacked firewood
Week 26 Scott Post, Delphi
- assisted with ????
Week 27
- assisted with ????
