As long as we are touting the virtues of HASL, some results we had in tests run a long time ago, are worth discussing.
We had a customer change from a normal microetch pre-treat before HASL to a virtual chemical polish, which left the pads looking bright and shiny. The results using a wave solder type HASL machine were dramatically flatter HASL deposits. We could never figure out why this happened, but we did not look a gift horse in the mouth....
