Hi,

In my book experience is more important than 20/20 eye sight. Not everyone finds problems, it is more than just eyes.

Is there a standardized test image containing faults that can be used? If the inspectors miss more than say 20% (pick the number) they get fired, good eyes or bad? And if they find 90% they are hired good eyes or bad?

Or maybe we adjust the pay to percentage of errors found?

Maybe our boss should do the same to us using the yield of the assembly floor?

Bob K.

Most OEMs work to and/or are certified to ISO 9001. In my opinion, if an inspector cannot see (without wearing corrective lens) then he or she does not have the necessary skills to be able to perform work affecting product quality (inspection would fall into this category) as mandated by ISO 9001 requirement 6.2.1.

Give them a blind test.

Sorry, I should have stated that...Theyre all using the 610/001 specified magnification ranges on "qualified" magnification aids (per IPC-OI-645).

My issue is that inspectors may have 20/80 vision, with glasses, and still be "certified" for inspection. How could they stare through a scope and accurately discern a cracked 0201 or solder fill criteria if they only see a blurry mass.

Im convinced that its a good thing, but I have to overcome the power of the HR department (dun, dun, dun) and justify it with industry consensus before theyre willing to take it further.

Hmmm... interesting. Does it matter if they use a magnification aid?

Yes. We require inspectors to pass an annual vision exam to 20-20 corrected.

Does anyone have a standard for an inspector's ability to see? We have required them to pass color-blind testing in the past, but have recently mulled over a visual acuity requirement. I wondered if this is more normal than not, because it seems like we would want to ensure that they see lines with definition rather than blurry masses.

I humbly look forward to any input that may be offered.

Don
