Hi all
It's placing new electrical or electronic equipment containing lead on the
market that is not allowed in EU. Even now it is not illegal to own lead or
to sell it, and it is legitimate to use leaded solder to repair pre ROHS
kit. Of course you can use it on non electrically powered gear or your car
electronics (also your aeroplane, tank, in vivo medical stuff and nuclear
power station if you have one). So **** are probably OK to have it on offer.
I'm not sure about Cyprus, but here they would almost certainly be Ok if
they reminded you of your position. Maybe that's why although our local
electronics hobbyist shop does sell leaded cored wire, you have to ask at
the parts counter for it as its not on the self service display racks.
(Curiously I haven't bought solder for some years).

The value thing is interesting. It will be a while before leaded solder has
scarcity value. Pb+ solder is still a significant share of the market;
highest in US lowest in China. Sn60 will stay bright for decades so it could
be old stuff, if so a handy mark up for someone even allowing for stocking
costs, the historic price of tin is very low compared to current levels. It
will almost certainly work as well as it ever did.
I'm a little puzzled on what it is. DIN specifications still exist in
Germany but on closer inspection are just transpositions of current IEC
specs (Similar but not always identical to IPC). Having said that I am
fairly sure that the FSW 32 spec is a true DIN spec referring to halide free
rosin and has not existed for some years. Probably someone has bought this
stuff up as a remaindered type item thinking they have a good deal.

If you do have some old kit and are into repairing it or making stuff up not
for sale, then it probably would be worth getting a reel or two as clearly
it won't be easy to find in years to come at the retail level and this offer
is likely a one off.

Regards

Mike

Buy all you can afford.

It will be worth a fortune one of these days!

Subject: [TN] Sn60/Pb40 RoHS???????????

This morning, the other half forced me into a supermarket run by a German
heavy discounter whose name is four letters with the first and last one
being the same.

To my astonishment, I found reels of solder wire with F-SW32 flux core
there, clearly labeled "Electronic solder". Guess what? It was Sn60Pb40!
They can't even claim it was old stock, because the store was opened only a
few months ago, the first on the island.

The solder was made in Wuppertal, Germany, noted for its monorail public
transport system, and was bright, not visibly oxidised, so I presume
reasonably freshly made.

As such solder is sold specifically as a component for electronics assembly,
is L*** on the wrong side of the RoHS Directive? If not, are they liable if
someone uses it to make an item of equipment for sale?

Brian
