Ohhh, I dunno. If you are looking to cure the coating in a manner that
does not quench the fluorescence, keep the parts dry, don't flood it with
high intensity (more than simple blacklight bulbs) and don't make it very
hot. Many coating manufacturers may be able to provide you with
alternative cure schedules that do not degrade fluorescence.

Not very promising or reliable... Thanks.

Joyce,
In addition to the excellent information that Phil offers, I have seen
high levels of heat degrade UV fluorescence (above 100C). I have also
seen assemblies come back to our service centers after being in the field
for 20-30 years and the fluorescence is often dramatically less, or even
gone completely. They do degrade with time.

Re: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Question

Joyce,

The degree of quenching of fluorescent tracer during UV cure depends
primarily on 2 factors. 1. The wavelength and intensity of UV radiation
and 2. The degree of loading of UV tracer in the formulation.

The UV tracer is one of the more expensive ingredients in the formulation
and so its use is typically kept to the lowest dose that will give
'acceptable' fluorescence for inspection purposes... the definition of
'acceptable' varies between material manufacturers and not all UV coatings
are equal in this regard.

Most of the common UV tracers have absorbtion peaks in the 360-400nm
range. Formulations prepared with initiation packages that are active in
this range will suffer from quenching more than those with initiation
packages primarily formulated in the 250-300nm range.

Mercury doped lamps (Fusion 'H' or 'H+' style) produce most of their
intensity in the 250-350 nm ranges and so typically 'quench' the UV tracer
less than a "D' style lamp which has a significant output of intensity at
these longer wavelengths.

My advice, look for materials formulated with more UV tracer and
initiation packages designed to activate at lower wavelengths, with lower
required overall dose (combination of intensity and time) and you should
be able to find materials that fluoresce very strongly post-cure - at
least as well as conventional coating materials. Also, avoid multiple
cure exposures wherever possible, for a whole number of reasons.

Hope this helps,

Phil.
