Steve,

The LED ring is good for daily inspection, with all benefits that have
already been described, however, it's less good for taking photos. The
resulting photos get nice colors but the image becomes flat and dead whereas
old halogen can be directed from the sides, which give a better topographic
picture. So, don't be too fast to send the halogens to the bin.

If you want a top quality photo, then use halogen fiber lights to come in
about 45 degrees and place a thinwalled coffee automat's plastic cup around
the object to be shot. Before you use it, cut out the cup bottom with a
scalpel.You will marvel.
